MIT: Development in fog harvesting process In the Namib Desert in Africa scientists have discovered a beetle that survives by drinking water droplets collected on its bumpy back. Chattre, a student at MIT, has followed the model of the beetle and has is researching ways to create a fog harvesting machine. They are experimenting with new materials to increase the efficiency of the machine and decrease the cost. Chattre, believes that a cheaper and more efficient machine will mean that more people around the world can access clean water. Another use of an efficient high capacity that Chattre brings out is how environmentally aware communities can use this machine to lower energy usage when collecting usable water. Since the machine does not need much maintenance, people in developing countries no longer need to spend as much time collecting water and have more time to do other tasks. A fog collecting machine can truly benefit the world in many ways.

A scratched coating heals itself A team of researches at Case Western University have recently discovered a polymer that can heal itself when scratched. The polymer is made up from a Napoleon complex and are created through a process called supra-molecular assembly. When hit with UV- light the polymer turns into a liquid state. When the UV light is gone it solidifies again. Scientists have shown that this is useful when a car is scratched. If the car was coated with this polymer all that would need to be done is to direct UV light at the spot that was scratched. Not only have researches discovered this new material they have also found out that this material can heal repeatedly in the same area. Perhaps in the future we would no longer need to worry about our cars being scratched. This new discovery is still in a development stage and not yet ready for commercial use. Stanford research moves nanomedicine one step closer to reality A new method to discover cancer has been recently developed. Unlike the conventional use fluorescence to locate cancer lesions and tumors, Scientists have now a new way that was tested successfully recently. First the tiny gold nano particles are injected into the cancer patient. Then the nano particles home in on the cancer tumor. Since within the composition of the nano particle, there are a variety of materials that give a high sensitivity signal it is much more easier to locate the exact location of the cancer cells. "Photoimaging with these nanoparticles holds the promise of very early disease detection, even before any gross anatomical changes show up, without physically removing any tissue from the patient," said Gambhir, a professor at Stanford University. This research is not far from commercial use in clinics. Scientists are still trying to decide whether there are negative side effects when the nano particles are administered. This is beneficial to the world because it opens doors to different ways the medical field can expand. The use of nano particles is truly an area of science with great potential in both the medical and commercial fields. "Stanford Research Moves Nanomedicine One Step Closer to Reality | E! Researchers combine active proteins with material derived from fruit fly Researchers at Rice University and Texas A&M, have discovered how a new material made from proteins found on fruit flies can help create artificial organs and nerves. The newly discovered material is called Ultrabithorax (Ubx). Ubx's unique properties include being able to assemble into a film at mild conditions and be strong enough to hold a drop of water in midair with the thinnest stretched line. In short Ubx is a superstrong and highly elastic natural fiber. The application of this material in the medical field is pointed out by Matthews, a researcher on the team. "We found that if you put a little drop of this protein solution on a slide, the Ubx forms a film. And if you touch a needle to that film, you can draw a fiber," Matthews said. He states that with the unique properties of this new material body tissues, nerves ,and organs can be constructed. The potential outcome of this newly discovered material could mean that we would no longer need to have organ donations and that body tissue and nerves that were damaged could be more easily repaired. High iron, copper levels block brain-cell DNA repair
According to the article, high levels of iron and copper create reactive oxygen species that attack DNA and interrupt the repair of DNA. Reactive oxygen species are responsible for the DNA damage, which leads to diseases such as Parkinson's disease. Damaging the strands of DNA's double helix is very fatal. The article mentions that curcumin, an Asian spice, protected an enzyme used for DNA repair. The issue of interrupted DNA repair can be solved by protecting the enzymes involved. Iron and copper are common in the human body. However, as human beings, we need to be careful and prevent having excessive amounts of these metals in our bodies.

ReplyDeleteSilk is created from a fine thread that originates from the cocoons of silkmoths. Modern silk comes from the cocoons of silkworms. The researchers created a new way to safely make the strands loose. The cocoons has a mineral layer coating. Through the process of demineralizing, the mineral layer is removed. As a result, continuous strands are produced, making the new silk longer and more durable. The effect will be positive. With this research, the silk industry could expand to other places in the world. The silk industry will thrive.

High iron, copper levels block brain-cell DNA repair
ReplyDeleteAccording to the article, high levels of iron and copper create reactive oxygen species that attack DNA and interrupt the repair of DNA.
