Sidner, Sara. "Solar panels power profit in Bangladesh" CNN.com. CNN, 12 April 2011. Web. 12 April 2011.

This article is about Grameen Shakti, a non-profit company in Bangladesh. This company has introduced a program that teaches Bangladeshi women to install and repair solar panels and electrical plugs in their homes and businesses, which has given them freedom to start their own businesses, such as charging a cell phone for a small fee, or using the electricity to power lights, which allows the Bangladeshi to continue working. I believe this event will be better for the environment, as they are using alternative energy sources.

  2. http://esciencenews.com/articles/2011/04/14/humpback.whale.songs.spread.eastward.latest.pop.tune

"Humpback whale songs spread eastward like the latest pop tune" e!ScienceNews.com. e!Science News, 14 April 2011. Web. 18 April 2011.

This article is about researchers at the University of Queensland, who are male humpback whales around the world, and about how their whale songs change. It is known that whales often sing, but its intention is wholly unknown. (Wholly. Whale. Whale-y. Wholly...never mind.) In this study, the researchers have found that 'new' whale songs originate from the west, and spread eastward. The new songs are often similar to those of 'last years', and are comparable to a 'Top 10 Hits Chart'. Ultimately, this discovery may have little to no effect on the environment, but it is interesting to learn. Also, it may further lead to whale mind control. Beware.

Choi, Charles. "Electric Wand Makes Fire Disappear" NationalGeographic.com. National Geographic, 29 March 2011. Web. 18 April 2011.

This article is about a research team from Harvard, who have figured out the connection between electric fields and fire, and have created an electric 'wand', which can separate the actual fire from its fuel source, which effectively puts it out. They also note that the wand would work with 1/10th the electricity it uses, leading to the thought of portability. Though it is not completed, this breakthrough could lead to the future of fire-fighting. This discovery and invention should be good for the environment, as forest fires could be lessened, and thus have less time to burn trees.

  4. In Nairobi, Kenya, trash has become helpful. It is burned and used to fuel a stove called the Community Cooker to cook food and heat water. Trash is brought in by residents and sorted out, and put on a rack to dry. It is then put in the heater of the stove to burn as fuel, and the heat destroys chemicals and toxins. 5 shillings are needed to use the Community Cooker. Residents who bring the trash get tokens for cooking time. This is a very convenient way to help the environment and help the community get together. It also helps reduce the trash and more solutions can be found in the future. I think what the people in Africa are doing is very helpful and good. They should continue doing this and come up with new ideas to help save the environment.

  5. Knight, Matthew “ Antarctic ozone hole affecting weather in tropics, new study says”, CNN, 22 April 2011.
This article is about the ozone layer over Antarctica affecting weather patterns in southern Antarctica. The Columbia University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences was the first to demonstrate the effects to the tropics from the Polar Regions. The hole over the Antarctic was first found in the 1980s. Sandy Kang and Lorenzo Polvani concluded that the hole I likely to cause atmospheric change in the Southern Hemisphere. The ozone layer is currently repairing itself and scientist think that it will be completed by the middle of this century, but it is just now that scientist found out this will cause climate changes in the Southern Hemisphere. The world will be affected because climate change can change that part of the world. I think this will have a positive impact because now scientists can study more on the effects of this climate change

  6. Whiteman,Hilary, “ Sea Monster fossil found in Peru desert”, CNN, July 1 2010

This article is about researches that stumbled upon fossils of a sea monster 3 times the size of today’s killer whale. The teeth of the Leviathan Melvillei can be as large as elephant tusks. The specimens found date back from 12 million to 15 million years ago. Strong winds revealed the fossil of this animal. The fossilized teeth were 12 centimeters in diameters in diameter and 36 centimeters long, which indicates it fed on large prey. The scientists think that this whale has gone extinct because of climatic deterioration. The Leviathan can be compared to a modern killer whale. This will affect the world because now we are learning about the changes in modern day whales compared to those of whales in the past. Think this will have a positive impact because now we have fossil evidence of whales from the past and we have a general picture of marine life back then

  7. Presse, Agence France, “ (HFR for Earth day) Pace of polar ice melt accelerating rapidly”, Mother Nature Network, March 23, 2011

This article is about the findings by Nasa about the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets melting speed and how the sea levels are rising. NASA published this finding on Tuesday. This uses the longest date examining changes to the polar ice sheet, it uses two decades of monthly satellite measurements including regional atmospheric climate data. Eric Rignot from the University of California says that the ice melting will dominate rising sea levels. He also says if this rate continues the rise will be significantly higher that the levels projected by the UN in 2007. The results showed that the global sea level rises by an average of.05 inches a year. Scientists say if this continue for the next decade the sea level can rise 5.9 inches by 2050The world will be affected because now they will have to make rules for emissions and will gave o get control to stop the rising sea level. I think this will have a positive effect because now we know that this problem is getting severe so we will do something about it

  9. In Africa, Lake Chad is shrinking and worrying residents. The lake is a resource, and used for fishing, irrigation, and drinking. It has been getting smaller over the years and is now only 1/20 the size that it used to be. The area of Lake Chad has dry and wet seasons, and the freshwater lake is depended on greatly by 20 million people. The land around the lake used to be fertile, but now is barren. People have said that the fish in the lake are now smaller than they usually were and less fish exist in the lake now. People are starving and there is no more food. The factors that affect the shrinking of this lake are irrigation for farmland and weather changes. Desertification has affected the area and locals who have formed a group called the Tree Planting Association are helping by planting trees around Lake Chad. I think the fact that the lake is shrinking so much is affecting the people and environment around it and it is very bad. People should do something quickly to bring back the lake, and not overfish or destroy the lake. They should be more careful around it and help out.

  10. Half of the population of (81 million people) Bangladesh have no electricity, and now might have for the first time. A new idea has sprouted and has become active. Women in the villages were taught how to install and fix solar panels and electrical outlets, by a company called Grameen Shakti, which began in 1996. Women who are taught have higher incomes and can now support families better. Homes can also have electricity and not have to use kerosene lamps. Businesses also are having the lights installed and has higher profits. Solar panels are 300 dollars, but worth the money. Electricity has helped Bangladesh and its people so much and made life easier for them. They have come up with new moneymaking ways by using electricity. One is a charging station for cellphones by paying. This program has been extremely helpful and has currently installed 550000 solar systems in 40000 villages. I think this electricity idea was very smart and is really helpful to the people of Bangladesh. Their lifestyle is more convenient and they are earning more money. In the future newer ideas to help people will be made
