"Genome of marine organism reveals hidden secrets." Biology News Net. May 10, 2011. May 11, 2011. Web.
This article is about a tropical marine species which researchers have uncoded its genome and its potential use on human on human diseases. Researchers from the University of San Diego have found that cyanobacteria have potential to fight against cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. The cyanobacteria is known for its destructive powers when algae blooms occur causing harm to coral reef, humans, wildlife, and livestock. I think that this is a great break through on the race for the cure for cancer because more people now days are getting cancer. I also think that its good that scientist have found a good use for such a destructive organism, although its one of the oldest in the world.
"Variety is the spice of life for animal movement" Biology News Net. May 10, 2011. May 11, 2011. Web.
This article is about the eating habits of animals. Scientist at the University of London and the University of Leichester have found that animals tend to move randomly when searching for food, rather than the popular belief of a patterned search. There was a belief that animals move small distances when hunting and occasionally long distances. But these researchers have found that animals move randomly throughout their environment searching for food. I think that this is a great find in the animal behavior world. This will help researchers find new things when researching animals and their hunt for food, perhaps they could find out taxis and kinesis of certain animals. I also think that this is bad news for hunters because they wont get the same catch every time they hunt.
"Zombie ants have fungus on the brain" Biology News Net. May 10, 2011. May 11, 2011. Web.
A multinational team of researchers have found that ants which are infected with a fungus act like zombies. They have found that when the ants are infected with this parasitic fungus they drastically change in behavior. The ant is controlled by the fungus to die in a place where the fungus could thrive once its host is dead. They researched this in the forest of Thailand where the ants live in the canopy of trees. I think that this is very interesting how the fungus controls the ant to die in a place with optimal conditions so that it could thrive afterward. I think that this is good for the world because if it could happen to an ant what are the chances that it could happen to humans? If we find that it could affect humans then we could stop it before it starts a zombie break out! (I was just joking about the last part)
"New mitochondrial control mechanism discovered" Biology News Net. May 10, 2011. May 11, 2011. Web.
Scientist found that the mitochondria is not only the power plant of the cell but it also can determine age related diseases. Diseases such as nonnormal aging. When the mitochondria lacks a certain protein which helps makes it ribosomes it increases the disease from the mitochondria. They have also linked some disease to diabetes. I think that this is a good find for people who use antiaging make up. If they know that they have this aging disorder than they will be able to save money and stop buying the make up.
"Through unique eyes, box jellyfish look out to the world above the water" Biology News Net. May 10, 2011. May 11, 2011. Web.
A new discovery has been made about box jellyfish. They have four eyes that could peer out of the water when they are near the surface no matter what position they are in. This is an amazing feat because jellyfish are known not to have advanced sensory organs especially eyes, they are know for their simplistic body style. For almost a 100 years scientist knew that these types of jellyfish had eyes but it wasn't until recent that they discovered the eyes could see out of water. I think that this is an interesting find because it give a probable cause for the jellyfish to evolve into a different species. Unless we havent found it yet. I think that for such a simple creature to have these types of organs is an amazing thing because in nature it requires alot of other things for an organism to properly use these attachments. Perhaps in the future we will see jellyfish with brains.
